Introduction

This volume presents selected examples of the rich heritage of Koprivnica-Križevci County, specifically the regions of Podravina and the Kalnik Prigorje. It is intended for visitors seeking to become acquainted with the area's most notable towns and their cultural and historical landmarks. The foundational information provided is complemented by a wealth of stories and legends from Podravina and Kalnik - many gathered here for the first time, and some published for the very first time. The book also highlights the region’s intangible heritage, including traditional cuisine, handicrafts, and folk trades, as well as customary practices and events such as The Legend of the Picoks. Basic information is provided on the area's galleries, museums, ethnographic collections, and visitor and interpretation centres. The final section explores the natural heritage of the region, from the river landscapes of the Drava and Mura - designated by UNESCO as part of the Mura-Drava-Danube Transboundary Biosphere Reserve - to the sandy terrains of Đurđevac and the unique natural features of the Kalnik mountains and foothills. Taken together, these elements reveal that Podravina and the Kalnik Prigorje cradle a wealth of hidden gems - waiting to be visited, discovered, and enjoyed. Moreover, many parts of Koprivnica-Križevci County embody a millennia-old harmony between people and nature, offering an irresistible destination for those seeking a blend of culture, authentic tradition, and natural beauty.
